ToggleCampaign Objectives
The client approached WebQuest with a brief to:
- To help recover from an unsuccessful migration that had resulted in a negative impact on organic search visibility and traffic;
- To achieve rankings across seven countries and 21 cities in both English and Arabic for the target keywords;
- To reach over 1,000 daily visitors from organic searches by the end of the year. When we started, the average daily visits from organic search were in the range of 300 –500 daily visits.
Target Audience & Strategy
The target audience included English and Arabic speakers across seven countries (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, Jordan, Oman, Lebanon, and Bahrain) and 21 cities, in addition to anyone outside of these countries who wanted to send a gift to a friend or relative who lives in these countries & cities. In order to meet the objectives stated above, we needed to:
- Identify which pages & searches were lost due to the migration.
- Define a completely new structure that would allow the website to target and rank not only on a country level, but also on a city level while accounting for all future expansion plans to other countries and cities.
- Identify, prioritize, and fix technical issues across the site.
Implementation & Creativity
The implementation included the following:
- Analyse HTTP server logs from as far back as possible – this helped us:
- Identify older pages (from previous versions) that were triggering 404 errors.
- Identify crawler behaviour and focus areas.
- Prioritize redirects and in some cases rebuild several high value pages that were lost in the migration.
- Build a new URL structure that takes into account:
- Supporting a multi-lingual website (English & Arabic).
- The target countries.
- The target cities within each country.
- The target categories within each city.
- The ability to scale and add other countries.
- The ability to scale and add other cities within a country.
- After implementing the new URL structure:
- Verify new Search Console properties for each language within each country.
- Verify a Search Console Domain Property.
- Implement hreflang on the country and main category pages.
- Crawl, Audit, and implement on-page SEO elements.
- Implement an internal linking structure that builds on the country-level silos.
Results & Evaluation
We were able to recover from the migration issues and even exceeded the levels of traffic prior to the migration.
Daily Organic Traffic went from 300-500 daily clicks to 1,700 – 1,900 daily clicks:
Anyone searching for “send gift city-name” (in Arabic and English) from anywhere in the world would get the correct city page ranking for them.
- Achieved organic growth of:
- 469% in Impressions – comparing July & Aug of the previous year vs July & Aug of this year.
- 385% in clicks – comparing July & Aug of the previous year vs July & Aug of this year.
- This resulted in an increase of 344% in transactions from Organic Traffic and an increase of 355% in revenue (the actual revenue amounts were requested to remain confidential) from Organic Traffic when comparing Aug this year vs Aug the previous year.
